kayaking basics

Two kayaks on calm water under a partly cloudy sky.

It's fun and easy!

  1.  Wear your personal flotation device (PFD) at all times.
  2. To get into the kayak: Stay low and go slow, to slide into the kayak without tipping over.
  3. Adjust your position: Sit with a straight back and a slight bend in your knees with your feet against the footpegs, to stay comfortable and stable.
  4. Secure your gear: Use dry bags to keep your belongings dry. Bring water.
  5. Holding your paddle:

                   a. Grip: Hold the paddle with your hands shoulder width apart.  Your knuckles should face upwards, and the blades should be perpendicular to the water surface.

                   b. Blade Orientation: The concave side of the paddle blades should face you.

             6. Forward stroke:

                    a. Catch: Twist your torso and place the paddle blade in the water ahead of you, near your feet.

                    b. Power: Rotate your torso, following the paddle with your eyes, to pull the blade back to your hip.

                    c. Release: Slice the blade out of the water when your hand is behind your hip.

              7. Stopping: Hold the paddle in the water to drag against it, slowing your kayak.

              8. Turning: To turn left, paddle only on the right side, and vice versa.

              9. Enjoy the scenery!
